It is an astounding work of fiction encapsulating generations of myth and
folklore, detailing whole races of elves, dwarves and men and they inhabit.
A broad description of it's constituent parts are:
The Fellowship of the Ring marks the beginning
of Frodo's thrilling adventure across Middle-Earth from the sleepy safety
of The Shire to Mount Doom. At times funny, heartbreaking and terrifying,
the Fellowship of the Ring was originally intended as a sequel to The
Hobbit and although it begins in the same vein and manner of storytelling,
it soon wanders down different, darker paths and leaves the reader in amazement
at the sheer scale of invention.
The Two Towers marks an increase in pace as the
Lord of The Rings winds on through new unforeseen paths in the quest to
destroy the One Ring. We share in the excitement of not one tale, but many,
as new unforeseen adventures unfold for the members of the fellowship we
have come to know and care for.
In The Return of the King the multiple strands
of adventure that our heros encounter are drawn slowly back together as
Middle-Earth prepares for war. Isengard is unleashed, the ents of Fangorn
forest are stirred and a great battle is looming for the Men of Gondor.
All the while Frodo and Sam inch ever forward towards their goal - the Cracks
of Doom in Mordor, lair of Sauron and mustering point for his hoards of
Orcs, goblins and fell men. The adventure leaps from the pages immediately
and the reader is carried on to the calamitous end.
The Lord of the Rings comes complete appendices and with lovingly drawn
maps based on those originally created by Christopher Tolkien.
